- このイベント、「科学」というテーマになっていますが、後援している企業のリストをみると、バイオテク企業が多いです。バイオジェンーアイデック、ミレニアム、ジェンザイム、ベルテックス、アルナイラムなど。ボストンにおける科学産業としての製薬企業、バイオテク企業の占める位置を表しているということでしょうし、またこれらの企業にとって、一般の人への啓蒙イベントを行い、科学・バイオテクノロジーへの理解を広めることが、自社および業界にとっての利益になると考えているということもあるのかな、と思います。
- このページの中に、バイオ関係の過去の講演が、[Stem Cell and Human Genome Series:title=「Stem Cell and Human Genome Series」]としてまとめられています。バイオテクノロジーのキーワードとして「再生医療」と「ゲノム」ということですね。ハーバードメディカルスクールや、MITのホワイトヘッド研究所の第一線の研究者が講演をしています。（日本の第一線の研究者の講演を配信している、というような日本サイトはありますでしょうか？）。2003年に開催された、WatsonとCrickによるDouble Helixの発見50周年を記念したイベントでの講演録(Part I - IV)もありました。

- 話の中に、日本市場で苦労した、という話が出てきます。また商品についてしっかりと情報提供できるTVのショッピング番組を通しての販売にこだわっているとのコメントがありました。先日、ショッピングチャンネルを見ていたら、このProactivの宣伝やっていました。ブログの女王？、眞鍋かをりさんを起用しているのですね。

- 上で取り上げているエピソードではじめて聞きました。本日現在の最新号では、アパレルメーカーL.L. BeanのCEOが今年の米国のホリデーシーズンのショッピング事情について話しているようです。こんど聞いてみようと思います。

- この書籍の中で、著者は、バイオテク企業が乗り越えなければならない「サイエンスをビジネスの対象とする」この産業特有のチャレンジとして、以下の３つをあげています。
1) how to finance highly risky investments under profound uncertainty and long time horizons for R&D,
2) how to learn rapidly enough to keep pace with advances in drug science knowledge, and
3) how to integrate capabilities across a broad spectrum of scientific and technological knowledge bases.
その解決法として、得た知的財産を短期のスパンで金銭的な利益に変えて行く事に重点を置くのではなく、長い期間をかけていくことを見越して、ビジネスモデル、組織形態、そしてファイナンスについて積み上げそして学んで行く事が大切と述べています。

- 講演の内容は、次の通りです。
In this role, McCracken is responsible for all business development activities at the company, including the identification and negotiation of collaboration and licensing agreements with academic institutions, biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical companies throughout the world. After a seven-year absence, McCracken rejoined Genentech in 2000 as Vice President of Business Development. During his earlier time with Genentech, McCracken served in many capacities, culminating in positions as Director of Business Development and Representative Director of Genentech Ltd., Genentech's wholly owned subsidiary in Japan.
McCracken has more than 19 years of experience in technical, business development and market development roles with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. He has also served as Vice President of Technology Licensing and Alliances at Aventis, and Vice President of Worldwide Business and Technology Development at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer S.A.
- 構成ですが、最初の３０分は、ジェネンテックの歴史を含め、非常によくまとまった会社紹介になっています。ジェネンテックという会社を知りたい場合に、ぴったりな内容です。後半の３０分は質疑応答です。質疑応答は、話題が飛びますので内容がすんなりと頭に入ってこないということはありますが、バイオテク企業に対するジェネリック医薬品企業の影響は？など興味深い説明もありました。
- The Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders lecture seriesの講演の中では、講演者が自分の生き方、ポリシーの一端を語るということが多いと思います。それに比べると、このエピソードは、いかにもといった感じの「会社紹介」の部分が多く、講演者の人となりがあまり見えてこないということが若干、残念なところです。ただし、本当は別の方（講演者のボス？）が講演する予定だったのが直前に変更になったようです。なので、講演内容について十分用意する時間がなかったのかな？とも思います。
